A charming look into what zoos used to be like. This 108-page guidebook
is still in very good condition. I’m pretty sure my folks went there when they
were “courting” in Chicago in 1948-50. It’s where I grew up, and spent many
happy days at what is now called Brookfield Zoo. There are writeups on nearly
every animal at the zoo—bears, lions and tigers, kangaroos, elephants, rhinos,
giraffes, giant pandas, primates, sea mammals, waterfowl, birds of prey,
tropical birds, serpents, crocodilians, lizards and turtles. From all of the
photographs, this zoo seemed more humane to the animals, with large outdoor enclosures
instead of putting them inside behind glass walls and chaining their feet to
the ground (elephants, rhinos, etc.). A real treasure from a bygone era.
